Germany Takes Over Saar After Referendum (1935)

Saar Region of Germany Night time torch light gathering. Crowd of people sing song and give nazi salute. Day time crowds give salute as the bells ring out from a church. More night time shots of happy crowds. Politicians from the Saar region. Travel shots along streets in Saarbruken in the snow. Armoured cars in the streets. People give Nazi salute as they pass. More shots of politician. CU Road sign. People in snow covered streets. More tanks / armoured vehicles. Child on sledge. Shots of chemical works in the industrial area of the Saarland. (Snow is here). Boys have a snowball fight. They have fun in the snow. More shots of people in the streets. Flowers tied to flag poles (?). More little tanks. (are these Germans or League of Nations?) Speeded up night time scenes with illuminated streets. CU calendar page 13 January 1935. French speaking guards inspect papers at border. One chap has to turn around and drive back. Travel shots coming up to customs and border post - papers are checked. People in parade in streets (transferred too fast - should be silent speed) Meeting in streets. Flags and speeches at meeting for keeping the status quo. Parade of Nazis. Meeting and parade of Communist supporters. N.B. The referendum vote for the Saar to return to German control was on Jan 13 1935, the result was announced on Jan 15. 90% of those voting wanted to return to German rule after being run by the League of Nations.
